In The Beginning God

The existence of our timeless God is presupposed in the very first line of the Bible.  His existence is basic and foundational to everything else that follows. He is eternally self-existent – timeless.  If you read the Bible through, you are likely to realize His presence and influence both in the authorship of the Bible and and its singular goal of showing His love for mankind through providing gracious redemption for a fallen race.  This realization is clearly the design of a good, kind and merciful Creator-God, and is a basic truth that one needs to keep in mind as he or she contemplates that He is holy and that His wrath is necessitated for the defense of His holiness.

God Exists as a Trinity

Another basic truth of the Bible is that God has revealed Himself as a Triune Being.  That is, He is One in three persons, characterized as The Trinity – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  This teaching is a mysterious one and there are some who oppose it, called unitarians.  The teaching of One God in three persons will probably remain a mystery until we get to Heaven.  I feel that we need two things where this is concerned: (1) to agree to disagree, and wait until then, and (2) be charitable when we don’t see eye to eye with each other.  In the meantime, we need to devote ourselves to the things that are clearly understood and live accordingly.  I remember hearing of someone who said, “It’s not the things that I don’t understand that trouble me, as much as  it is the things that I do understand.”

Manifold Manifestations of God

Third, we need to observe all the ways that the Lord has manifested Himself to us.  Let’s begin with the obvious fact of Creation.  The Creation speaks of intelligent design.  It didn’t just randomly happen.  Of course, as someone has observed, there was undoubtedly a ‘big bang’ when God spoke the universe into existence.  However, it just makes sense that the complex, vast universe did not just randomly happen.  In addition to the wonder of creation, every person is born into the world with a moral consciousness.  Where would that come from except a righteous God, who made us?  Then, there is this amazing Book we call the Bible that has been preserved and protected for centuries more than any other book!

The Historical Christ

On a hill far away

But, the crowning revelation of the Almighty and loving God is His “only begotten Son, Jesus Christ,” Who said through the prophet, “Lo,  I come to do Thy will O God.”  And, He did, and as the Bible says, “By that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.” (Heb. 10.10)  God manifested Himself in human history the Second Person of the Trinity, His only begotten Son.  We are told that Christ is, “the brightness of His (the Father’s) glory and the express image of His person,”

God’s Timeless Purpose

God has an eternal purpose according to the Bible. (Ephesians 3.11)  That purpose is expressed by what we read in 2 Cor. 5.19, ” God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation..”  His purpose is not simply to reconcile us, but rather to commission us to go and disciple others.  Only when those whom He has redeemed become obedient servants of God is His eternal purpose satisfied.

Basic: God is timeless – eternal!

Jesus said to His disciples, “I go to prepare a place for you, and if I go to prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you to Myself that where I am, there you may be also. (John 14.2b,3)  God’s purpose is a timeless one, one that encompasses eternity.  His purpose includes you.  It can be apprehended only by faith in the redemptive work of Christ!
